Ask Ken - Vinyl Plank

Not All Vinyl Plank Locks Together the Same Way

Most luxury vinyl plank looks about the same once it is down. The real difference is the locking system underneath, and it is the part you cannot see when you shop on price alone.

Ken's Take: Why the Locking System Matters

Ken Fain explains the one place cheap vinyl plank tends to fall short, and why it puts your floor at risk.

Why a Weak Locking System Puts Your Floor at Risk

On the surface, most vinyl plank looks similar. The difference that matters is the locking system, the mechanism that holds the planks together both side to side and at the butt ends. When that system is inferior, the floor is at risk of coming apart.

Installers who work with the cheap plank from big box stores tell us it is harder to install for exactly that reason. A locking system you cannot rely on makes for a harder job going down and a floor that is more likely to fail later.

That is why buying on price alone is risky. The cheapest possible plank can turn into an expensive mistake once it is already on your floor.

How We Help You Choose Vinyl Plank

At Island Carpet Tile & Hardwoods, we only carry vinyl plank with a locking system we trust. Big box stores and some other shops may not, and that is where a lot of the failures start. Once your LVP goes down, we want it to stay there.

There is a huge selection of vinyl plank out there, but only a handful of options are really right for a given home. Our job is helping you narrow it down to the ones that fit your traffic, your style, and your budget.

Only Locking Systems We Trust
We do not stock vinyl plank with a locking system we would not put in our own home. Every line is built to stay tight side to side and at the ends.
