Ken's Quick Answer:

Why are we talking toilets? Bathroom renovations in older homes can uncover structural damage from years of toilet leaks. Yes, we’re talking about those dreaded “hidden conditions.”

Ken's In-Depth Answer:

Today, I'm bringing up a delicate subject. It's your toilet.

Why am I talking about toilets? Very often, we are asked to work on bathrooms and put in a new tile, luxury vinyl plank, or sheet vinyl floor.

In old houses, very often, toilets leak. And to be honest, that's not the only things that leak. Men are known for (sometimes) having bad aim.

You may have a problem around your toilet that you can't see. It may also be a problem that we can't see. It's what we call a "hidden condition."

Once we begin to pull up the existing floor, you may have rotten subfloor or structural floor. That may require new plywood or, sometimes, structural remedies and mold remediation.

So, that's the sad and sometimes ugly truth about redoing your bathroom—as well as problems you might find around your toilet.
