Ask Ken - Flooring Advice

Before You Choose a Floor, Think About What's Under It.

Subfloors are the first thing we look at. Concrete, plywood, particle board, epoxy. What you have underneath determines what products will work and how the installation needs to be approached.

Ken's Take: Why Subfloors Come First

Ken walks through why the floor under your floor matters and why getting this wrong can cost you thousands.

What We Look for Before We Recommend Anything

We have a saying at Island Carpet: every home is different, every job is custom. That means every floor is different too. It's our job to find out not just what surface finishes you have, but what's underneath them.

Subfloors matter. Are they concrete? Plywood or particle board? Epoxy? Each one changes what products will work and how the installation needs to be done. Tile on plywood or glue-down vinyl on epoxy can easily lead to failed installations. We only recommend products that work for your specific space and situation.

Understanding what you have for a substrate is the first step to understanding what types of flooring products we should be looking at, regardless of what floor you think you want or what you think might work.
