Modern WPC vinyl plank tends to have an expanded core, making it softer and quieter underfoot. SPC is made of a stone plastic composite and is therefore (generally) more dent resistant. We recommend evaluating each product individually. We’ll help you do just that when you visit our showroom.
I want to talk to you again about luxury vinyl plank. This time I want to discuss the difference between WPC and SPC products.
WPC means wood plastic composite. That was the original luxury vinyl plank. Later on they came out with SPC which stands for stone plastic composite—yes, they include real stone in the mixture.
This made SPC stronger and more dent resistant allowing it to be used in commercial situations. A lot of times, though, we found people didn't use it right and didn't put it over a suitable surface. That meant a lot of SPC installations failed.
The failed installations didn't have to do with what SPC was made of—a lot of times it was a poor locking system.
One thing you will notice about a lot of these new WPC products is that they are thicker. They have what is called an expanded core. That makes it softer/quieter underfoot. It also may make it a little more forgiving of subfloor irregularities.
I am not saying to avoid SPC. Take a look at each product individually—including what it is constructed of, what your trusted retailer thinks of its locking system, its color and style. In general, though, the industry is making a subtle shift back in the direction of the older WPC construction—thanks to its expanded core.
