Ask Ken — Flooring Advice

Hardwood or Vinyl Plank? Here's How to Decide

The right choice depends on how you live, and what you're willing to accept when it comes to wear and tear.

Want to hear Ken walk through it?

Ken explains how he thinks about the hardwood vs. vinyl plank decision — and why the answer is not the same for every home.

The real question is not which floor is “better”

Real hardwood is alluring. No manufactured product has exactly the same natural grain, depth, and long-term feel. Sometimes marks can even add to the character of the product.

Luxury vinyl plank is built for households where the floor has to deal with shoes, pets, kids, sand, spills, and constant use without demanding as much attention.

That does not mean vinyl plank is automatically the right answer. Some people will always prefer hardwood's style and its feeling underfoot. The mistake is expecting hardwood to perform like a vinyl product.

That is why we ask you questions about your home before we sell you anything. We want you to have a beautiful floor that will last you for years to come.

Scratch and scuff marks on a wood floor
Scratches on hardwood are normal. The question is not whether they can happen — it is whether they will bother you.

Other factors worth weighing

Scratches are only part of the decision. Cost, moisture, maintenance, installation, and long-term expectations all matter too. Luxury vinyl plank is often less expensive than hardwood and can be a practical choice in rooms where moisture or heavy traffic are part of daily life.

Hardwood has its own long-term advantage: depending on the product, it may be possible to sand and refinish it later. (Just know — this is often a messy and expensive process.) Vinyl plank cannot be refinished in the same way. But with glue-down vinyl floors, damaged or worn planks can be easily replaced.

The right choice comes down to your household, your tolerance for wear, and how you want the floor to age.

Hardwood has something LVP can't fully replicate
The texture, warmth, and authenticity of real wood are genuinely distinct. For homeowners who want the real thing and can accept normal wear, hardwood is still a beautiful floor.
LVP has closed the gap dramatically
Modern luxury vinyl plank styles are getting harder to distinguish from real wood — and the durability advantage in busy homes can be meaningful.
