You can see the pattern on the sample, but a small swatch cannot tell you how it lays out across a room. Before you order patterned carpet, you want to see how that style and color actually plays out on a real floor.
Both of these paths still call for seeing the room scene before you order. The difference is what you are asking the carpet to be first: a bold design statement, or an easy-to-live-with floor that still looks great.
A strong pattern can make a room, but the sample cannot tell you how it reads at full scale. Before you commit, look at the manufacturer room scene so you know whether it lays out smooth or busy across the floor.
Built for homes with pets and kids, these styles are made to take spills and everyday traffic and still look good. The pattern still matters here, so you will want to see the room scene before you commit.
Ken Fain explains why a carpet sample cannot show you how a pattern will really lay out across your floor, and where to look before you order.
A lot of carpets today have a pattern, and you can see that pattern on the sample. What you cannot see is how it plays out across a room. The same style might lay out smooth and homogenous, or it might create a busy floor, and a small swatch will not tell you which.
You are not going to order a roll of carpet just to find out. What you can do is go online. Most manufacturers have room scenes, photos that show how a style and color lay out in a real room, and sometimes they are right on the sample board.
So when you are choosing patterned carpet, look up the style and color from the manufacturer and see how it lays out in a room. Make sure you like the pattern before you order. It matters as much in carpet as it does in wood and luxury vinyl plank.

At Island Carpet Tile & Hardwoods, we will pull up the manufacturer room scenes with you, so you can see how a style and color actually lay out across a floor before you commit, not just how they look on a small sample. If you want a bold pattern or a floor that stands up to pets and kids, we can show you the ones that hold up at full scale.
There is a huge selection of patterned carpet out there, but only a handful are really right for a given room. Our job is helping you narrow it down to the patterns that look right in your home.
Do not order patterned carpet from a sample alone. Visit our Middletown showroom and we will pull up the room scenes with you, so you know how the style and color will look across your floor before you buy.
